Community High School District 155 is looking to return to the Sage YMCA for swim team practices and meets following a one-year hiatus.

The School District went elsewhere last year when the Sage YMCA of Metro Chicago increased its rental charges.

Negotiations between the Crystal Lake YMCA and District 155 have cut the per-lane pool charge in half – from $50 per hour to $25 per hour.

The result of the negotiations is a proposed one-year, $45,850 rental agreement that will be considered at the District 155 Board meeting Tuesday.

Under the agreement, the district’s boys and girls swim teams would practice at the YMCA and conduct a total of five meets at the facility.

The district will use seven of the pool’s eight lanes from 2:30-4:30 p.m., designated as non-peak hours at the Y. Because of the earlier practice time, swimmers wanting to make the full practice would have to miss ninth period.

Last year, the Cary-Grove High School girls swim team practiced at Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center in Crystal Lake. A co-op boys and girls team for the district’s remaining three schools practiced at Woodstock High School.

The co-op’s five home meets last year were conducted at Sage.

District 155 had budgeted $43,040 for meets, pool rentals and transportation to and from practices for this year.

Jeremy Davis, District 155 assistant superintendent of finance, operations and technology, noted the agreement is slightly higher than what the district had budgeted but the appeal of the venue was something that carried weight with the district’s swim team families.

“[Sage YMCA] is a nice facility and the swim community seemed to want to end up there,” Davis told the Northwest Herald.

Sage has a swim team, which includes some District 155 students during their off season.

“The really important thing is the YMCA is a community destination and it’s important, if we have four high schools here that don’t have a pool, to try to work diligently to allow them to swim here,” said Robyn Ostrem, director of the Sage YMCA.
